Pfizer Inc. said Thursday it has reached an agreement with Eli Lilly and Company to produce a generic version of its erectile dysfunction drug, Viagra Connect, to market in Europe and other countries. The deal will allow Pfizer to produce a generic version of the drug as early as January 2009.
Pfizer shares were down more than 1 percent on the New York Stock Exchange after a market research analyst disclosed the deal in a note to investors on Thursday.
Viagra Connect was a major competitor to Viagra and other erectile dysfunction drugs sold by competitors, Pfizer said. It is expected to generate approximately $5 billion in revenue by 2011, according to Lilly.
The erectile dysfunction drug, which is sold by Eli Lilly, is a medication for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction. It is the first and only drug approved for the treatment of this condition.
Viagra Connect contains the active ingredient sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction. It is available by prescription only and is not a controlled substance under the federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. The generic version, called sildenafil citrate, is available by prescription only.
Lilly and Pfizer are also interested in developing a second form of the drug, a generic version, and will discuss the development of such a version later this year. Lilly is seeking approval to sell the second generic version of Viagra Connect in the United States by 2011.
Lilly said in a press release that the deal between the two companies "means the combination of Lilly and Pfizer will be able to bring Viagra Connect to market in more than half the world's population and expand access to treatment for men with erectile dysfunction."
Pfizer said it will continue to market the Viagra Connect product in the United States, where the drug was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in November.
The U. Food and Drug Administration granted Pfizer a 180-day exclusivity on the erectile dysfunction drug from 2012, but Lilly retains the rights to the drug and the rights to manufacture and market the drug in the United States.
The company said that it would work with Pfizer to develop an FDA-approved generic version of the drug that would work equally well for both countries.

Lilly will produce the generic version of Viagra Connect in Europe and other countries as early as 2009. Pfizer said that the company "agrees with Pfizer's position" that it can produce the generic version of Viagra Connect in the United States by 2012.
Pfizer said it intends to use the Viagra Connect version of the drug in Europe and other countries by 2011.
In May, a European court ruled that Pfizer had not violated the European Convention on Human Rights by manufacturing the Viagra Connect in the United States.
Pfizer and Eli Lilly said that the company did not intend to use Viagra Connect in the United States and European markets and had "limited knowledge" of the drug's safety and effectiveness.
Lilly said that it has taken "multiple significant steps" to promote the development of the drug in the United States and Europe, including an "in-house consultation" with its medical team and an "implant" program that will "be available online by 2025" for all patients.
Pfizer said in a statement it has "no desire" to market a generic version of the drug in any other country. However, Pfizer said that it "continues to work closely with Lilly to develop an FDA-approved generic version of Viagra Connect that is as effective and safe as the first generic version and available to patients in the United States and Europe."
Lilly said it will continue to market the drug in the United States and other countries by 2011.
It has not commented on any agreements between Pfizer and Lilly regarding the development of the drug.
